A clean and organized home is essential for seniors to enjoy a high quality of life. Here at Families Choice Home Care, we offer light housekeeping and basic home upkeep as part of our general senior care services.
A light, bright, and well-kept home is not only better for senior mental and emotional wellbeing, but it also helps to keep their home more accessible and to prevent trip and fall accidents.
House Cleaning for Seniors
These services are woven into our menu of in-home caregiving service offerings and are not the same as a full maid service or designed to provide deep cleaning. Our agency is happy to refer you to local service providers in the area for things that are on the heavier side of “light housekeeping.”
Our housekeeping and home upkeep services include:
Focus on the four main living areas
Our caregivers focus on the four main living areas of the home:
- Kitchen
- Bathroom
- Living room
- Bedroom
These are the rooms in which we’ll be spending the most time with our senior clients and so they deserve the most attention.
Rooms will be tidied up on a daily or shift basis and can be cleaned weekly – paying special attention to daily dishes, clean and hygienic surfaces and spaces, and the elimination of trip hazards.
Light organization for accessibility
In the beginning, we are happy to do some light organization to make things more accessible. For example, rearranging the kitchen and bathroom cabinets so that the most-used items are within easy reach. The same is true for the closets in the four main living areas. The goal is to keep the house as independently and safely accessible as possible for you.
If we see there is a greater need for accessibility modifications (additional lighting, railings, grab bars, ramps, slip-proof rugs, etc.), we will bring these to your attention and can refer you to local, licensed handy person services or contractors to perform relevant tasks.
Clean and tidy living spaces
Here are some of the basic housekeeping tasks we focus on:
- Dusting
- Vacuuming
- Cleaning surfaces and mirrors
- Cleaning sinks, the toilet, the bath/shower area
- Keeping hard surface flooring swept and mopped
We are also available to do very basic home upkeep tasks such as changing batteries in smoke alarms and CO detectors or replacing light bulbs as long as the replacement items are on hand or are added to the grocery shopping/errands list.
Additional home decluttering or organizational tasks may also be included depending on the need(s) and the time required. As you can imagine, caregiving is always the number one priority.
Laundry and linen changes
Housekeeping chores are tiring for seniors, but some tasks are more challenging than others – especially when mobility is an issue.
Our caregivers happily do the laundry so clients always have access to clean clothes. We’ll also run weekly loads of linens and change the sheets so your senior loved one has fresh towels and sheets regularly. We will swap out seasonal blankets and comforters as needed throughout the year.
Light ironing is available for dressier clothes, blouses, dress shirts, and slacks. If you’ve enlisted us to support with errands and transportation, we can also make the dry cleaners a regular part of the route for formal or seasonal clothing, comforters, tablecloths, etc.
Respite Care + Cleaning Services
Don’t forget about the importance of respite care services and think about adding housekeeping services to those shifts.
If you are a primary caregiver for a spouse, parent, or grandparent, consider giving yourself a day off every week or so to take care of your own needs or for a well-deserved day off. Our licensed caregivers can provide light housekeeping during their respite care shifts, which gives you a break in more ways than one.
Families Choice Home Care services are completely customized to your needs, and light housekeeping is one of our most popular add-ons.
